Do you want a more powerful website than your competitors?

What does having a powerful website really mean to you?  Is it a site that looks amazing and catches your attention from the second it opens, or is it a site that runs faster than the speed of light, or maybe it’s a site that handles massive complexity within a simple structure.  Depending on how you answer this question, will depend on what answer you’re going to get.

Here’s a few tips that will hopefully cover a few different angles for your next website project:

6. The need for speed – a host to power your needs

A good speedy hosting provider is essential for a powerful and speedy website.  But purchase within your limits.  If you’ve got money to burn, then sure – go for the fastest hosting provider on the earth, but if you’ve got a budget you’re trying to meet, and in fact there is a limit to where you can flash your money, then consider finding a hosting provider that best meets the needs of your proposed website.

Bluehost, for example, are great for large business websites expecting really high traffic.  However for a smaller business with a simple blogging site, for example, someone like Crazy Domains might be sufficient for your needs.  Of course there are many companies who offer hosting – your local IT professoinal might be able to provide you with a sufficient service too.  Look at all the options before you jump straight in!

5. Make it look good

Let’s be honest – everyone judges a book by its cover – especially when that ‘book’ is your website!  Get the colour-scheme right and be sure to use high quality images throughout.  There’s nothing worse than low-quality snap-shot style photos to bring down the vibe of a website.  It’s an instant turn-off!

If you don’t have professional photos to show off your products and services, consider investing in some.  The money will be well worth it and the photos can be used throughout your marketing material too – so it’s an investment that will bring you benefit in multiple ways.  Can’t afford a professional photographer or the logistics just aren’t do-able – there’s always stock photography to consider too.  As with everything – you can get a budget subscription with a website like StoryBlocks, or higher-end subscriptions with Adobe Stock, for example.

Either way – make it look good – it’s essential for a ‘Wow-factor’ reaction!

4. Powerful content is key

Make sure you don’t waffle too much – get to the point. Speak to the language of your audience – so make sure you keep the jargon language to a minimum, or at least – at the same level of your expected readers.  Use logical headings to help your readers find their way – so they can easily skip through the content they don’t want to read.

We always recommend getting your content written by a professional copywriter – that way you can provide them with the key information and they can take on the task of putting into an appropriate format that is suited to your audience.  A professional copywriter doesn’t have to be an expensive add-on, but the value you’ll get from well written content could be the key that gives your site that professional edge over your competitors.

3. Research your target audience

If you want your site to kick goals for your business, you’ve got to know who your target audience is so you can tailor your site to capture their attention! A common mistakes people make when designing their site is to make it look the way they like it best – but what you like, is not necessarily what will be best to capture your target audience.

A lot of businesses will say that they don’t have a target market – or that ‘everyone’ is their target market, and in most cases, this isn’t true.  You need to drill down to specifics.  What geographical area do they reside / word / go to school / etc, are they within a particular age range, are they predominantly male / female, do they have particular hobbies / interests, etc.  Think of as many variables as you possibly can, and put together a list.

To take it one step further, you can then look at each of the components that make up your target market, and tailor the layout, design, colour scheme, imagery and content to target your desired audience.

2. Keep it simple

Keep your eyes on the ball with layout, design and functionality by having clear and easy navigation links (your websites’ menu) and well placed content. If a user can’t find what they’re looking for within a few seconds, they’re likely to leave your website without having even seen your main sales pitch or message yet.  So keep it simple, and keep them on your site!

Quite often, someone will be browsing your site looking for something in particular to meet their needs.  If what they’re looking for isn’t on the home page (or the first page they come to), then this means they’ll need to start clicking around to find it.  Having a good navigation system in place should aim to limit the number of clicks that are required to get to any particular page on the website.  Ideally, only 1 click to get anyway – this can be achieved by using drop-down menus.  Two clicks isn’t too bad – but anything more than that and you’ve likely lost a customer to boredom or frustration…

1. Our number one TOP TIP for a powerful website…

This is the easiest part of all – get it done by a professional web designer!

Eliminate the efforts of doing it yourself, and potentially getting it very wrong.  Get a professional to build you a site that is packed with power, along with the latest and greatest functionality and features that have been developed – or better yet – have them custom developed to meet your specific needs!

There are many DIYers out there who will do a good job, or maybe even a great job – but have they factored in things like server software (are you using the correct PHP version for example), have you written your content and structured your page with SEO considerations in mind (including all your meta data, alt tags, use of headings etc), has your target market been taken into account – or are you just building a site that you like the look of….  And the questions continue!

So in conclusion, finding one solution or one answer to point you in the direction of ‘the most powerful website’ in the world wide web, is not a straight-forward discussion.  But hopefully these tips will have, at the very least, given you some food for thought on what to do next and where to concentrate your thoughts during the planning phases of building your site.
