What an exciting day to be alive – DNS Flag Day 2019 is here!
Let’s talk DNS.
Firstly, let’s talk about what is the DNS. The current Domain Name System, aka DNS, is a naming system used to connect ‘things’ to the internet. It’s quite a complex web of interactions between domain names, IP addresses, name servers etc etc. If you’re interested, and geeky enough, to want to know more, Wikipedia does an ok job at explaining things. The current DNS standards were created about two decades ago, and so the time has come to update a few of these standards to ensure things keep progressing and becoming more efficient.
This move is supported by quite a few major players such as Google, Facebook, CloudFlare, Cisco, and more.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]
What is DNS Flag Day?
So now that you understand what the DNS is (you do understand now don’t you!), DNS Flag Day is the day that service providers have agreed to remove any accommodations for non-compliant DNS implementations from their software and services. So if your DNS server is non-compliant, your website might start experiencing problems.
Here’s a few examples that might be as a result of a non-compliant DNS domain name:
- When opening the URL on your browser: <URL>, it will timeout, and
- The problem started after February 1st, and
- Your browser might explain the “host” could not be resolved, and
- Connecting directly to the <instance>.service-now.com works correctly.
Test Your DNS Domain Name
Of course, you can check your website by simply visiting it online, but if you want to know for sure if you’re site is unaffected, you can test it yourself using the DNS Flag Day service here.
Once you’ve run the test, you can also view the report associated with your domain name. If your test does not return ‘ok’ – that is, if there’s a problem detected, be sure to download your report and discuss with your hosting provider to have the problems resolved.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”20″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]
